Are you overweight?

Watching our weight is quite a thing for many people in our daily lives. We simply cannot ignore Newton's law. And not when camping. In many cases it even comes together when we have to prepare for our next trip.

The camper is too heavy.

An overloaded camper is more common than you think, especially with campers with a B driving license (max 3,500 kg). Many people unknowingly load too much. The camper is usually not technically built for that.

Implications:

  • Fines or driving ban during checks.
  • Poorer road holding or longer braking distance.
  • Increased wear on tires and brakes.
  • Being uninsured in the event of damage.

Tips to lose weight:

  • Weigh your camper empty and loaded at a weighbridge or purchase a weighing plate.
  • Minimize duplicate items.
  • Use lightweight camping gear, such as aluminum pans or foldable accessories.
  • Look at what really needs to be taken: you don't have to take everything for "all cases".
  • Replace heavy household batteries with a lithium variant.
  • Avoid full water tanks on the road. A full tank is easily 100 kg.
  • Empty the grey water tank regularly.

With the most beautiful view.

Yes, who wouldn't want that? On a beautiful lake or a river, or looking out over a vineyard or a valley. That's how we were in 2023 at camping Seiser-Alm in the Dolomites. The view was really fantastic, see photo, the sanitary facilities too. So I'm not going to tell you how much an overnight stay cost.... :)

Physical obesity and camping

If you find that physical exertion such as climbing stairs, cycling or sleeping in a narrow camper space becomes more difficult, these tips may help:

Tips:

  • Choose a camper with a low entry or electric step.
  • Take a lighter folding bike or e-bike for mobility without overload.
  • Pay attention to the sleeping place: a fixed bed in the back is often more comfortable than a lifting bed. And a lifting bed also has a maximum weight that it can have.
  • Plan active stops: walking, swimming, cycling along the way.
  • Healthy RV Cooking: Keep it light and simple so you can make healthy choices on the road.
