Safe on the road

A camper trip is a great way to combine freedom and adventure, but safety always comes first. Below is a handy guide to get you well prepared and safely on the road.

Preparation is everything

Maintenance & technical inspection:

  • Check tire pressure and tread.
  • Check oil level, coolant, windshield washer fluid and brakes.
  • Are all lights working properly? (Headlights, turn signals, brake lights).

Papers & insurance:

  • Make sure you have your driver's license, registration certificate, insurance papers and green card at hand.
  • Check that your insurance provides coverage in all countries you are traveling to.

Load the camper correctly:

  • Distribute the weight evenly.
  • Place heavy items at the bottom and against the axle.
  • Make sure everything is properly secured, even while driving.

Spare tire:

Did you know that in the following European countries you are required to have a spare tire or repair kit with you? Spain, Croatia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia. And with a spare tire you are also on your way again instead of being towed away, garage etc.

While driving

Keep an eye on your speed:

  • A camper is heavier and slower than a regular car – adjust your speed, especially in bends or in windy conditions.

Note the height and width:

  • Know how high your camper is and pay attention to bridges, tunnels and parking garages. Put a note with the dimensions behind your sun visor.

Be extra alert when reversing:

  • Use a backup camera if you have one, or ask someone to help.

Drive slowly and plan your route:

  • Take regular breaks, avoid fatigue.
  • Plan routes based on roads suitable for campers (use a camper navigation system if necessary).
